Storyboard Text

  • This quote demonstrates Elie's initial perspective in regards to religion. It presents a sort of devotion which he has towards God.
  • Together we would read, over and over again, the same page of the Zohar. Not to learn it by heart but to discover within the very essence of divinity.
  • This quote demonstrates the first response Elie has in regards to the camp. It clearly expresses his gradual change in belief, for he describes his prior faith in a doubtful manner.
  • Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forvever.
  • This quote clearly demonstrates a certain loss of faith. Religion was no longer of any use to him through his future hardships.
  • The student of Talmud, the child I was had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me/ My soul had been invaded- and devoured- by a black flame.
  • This quote demonstrates not only the loss of faith but a growing anger in regards to his situation. Weisel is essentially blaming his troubles on God himself.
  • Blessed be God's name? Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled.
  • This quote emphasizes the fact that Elie no longer felt part of the Jewish community in general. His beliefs were completely shattered since he had arrived to this treacherous destination. His faith was replaced with an empty void of sorrow and despair.
  • In the midst of these men assembled for prayer, I felt like an observer, a stranger.
  • Despite Elie losing his faith, this quote clearly demonstrates the fact that Elie was able to surpass that boundary , for it was the only thing he could do at that moment, no matter how small of a gesture it seemed to be.
  • And in spite of myself, a prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believed in.
