Emma Edmonds had enlisted in the Union army, specific regiment being the 2nd Michigan under a contract in the army spanning for a portion of 3 years, in this particular image is a depiction of Emma Edmonds (at the front of this particular line) enlistig as a recruit to the Union army.
At one point, after the death of a particular person who she had known previous to the Civil war, she had decided to meet with Mrs. Butler, and consequently, due to that fact, she had become teary eyed, and due to that fact had, unintentionally, explained that she had been, in truth, a female.
At one pint in her military career, Emma Edmonds was assigned to spy duty, and to hide the particular fact that she had served for the Union army, she had devised a way in which to conceal that fact that she had been a Union spy in the form of a female Irish immigrant who had been in support of the Confederacy who would peddle goods to Confederate soldiers, and on the way to an encampment, due to the rain, she had sheltered herself in a cabin, and discovered a Confederate soldier with a particular ailment who was on the verge of becoming deceased.
Evidently, as she is a spy serving the Union army, she assigned to missions in which she is to gather information about the opposing military force, and there was a particular mission in which she was to gather information, and attempt to discover the particular Confederate spy who had concealed himself, and had devised a disguise, and designated an alias, Charles Mayberry to disguise herself, she had managed to discover the particular people involved in the provision of information to the Confederate army.
During her particular time as a soldier, she had contracted what is refereed to as malaria and due to that fact, she had not any other particular alternative to deserting the U.S army so as to cure herself without having been discovered to be a female, and due to that, she had been deemed a deserter which had been quite unfortunate to her.
