  • I will use 95 Theses for the debate.
  • The formal separation of a church into two churches or the secession of a group owing to doctrinal and other differences. simony is the buying or selling of ecclesiastical privileges, for example pardons or benefices.
  • Five Solas
  • Consisting of twenty-eight white marble steps, at Rome, near the Lateran; according to tradition the staircase leading once to the moratorium of Pilate at Jerusalem, hence sanctified by the footsteps of Our Lord during his Passion.
  • Diet of Worms
  • Acting on this belief, he wrote the “Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,” also known as “The 95 Theses,” a list of questions and propositions for debate. Popular legend has it that on October 31, 1517 Luther defiantly nailed a copy of his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle church.

  • The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged from the Protestant Reformation intended to summarize the Reformers' basic theological principles in contrast to certain teachings of the Roman Catholic Church of the day. "Sola" is Latin meaning "alone" or "only" and the corresponding phrases are:
  • An imperial diet was a formal deliberative assembly of the whole Empire. This one is most memorable for the Edict of Worms (Wormser Edikt), which addressed Martin Luther and the effects of the Protestant Reformation. It was conducted from 28 January to 25 May 1521, with the Emperor Charles V presiding.
