  • The narrator is introduced to the reader. The narrator tries to prove to the reader that he is not insane.
  • Climax
  • The narrator has a problem with the Old Man's "Vulture eye". Because of the Old Man's eye, the narrator plans to kill him.
  • Falling Action
  • For eight nights the narrator goes into the Old Man's room and watches him while he sleeps. The narrator moves the lantern to where there is a ray of light on just his "Vulture eye".
  • Resolution
  • The narrator wakes up the old man by accident and attacks with his mattress. He holds the mattress over the old man's body until his heart stops beating.
  • Two police men come into the old man's house because someone heard the old man yelling. They stayed and talked to the narrator for a little while.
  • The narrator thinks he hears the old man's heart beating, even though he killed him, and believes that the police can hear it too. The narrator confesses to killing the old man and shows the police where his body is.
