A boy named Theodore Finch is on top of the school bell tower, thinking about the effects of jumping. As he goes to turn around he notices notices one of the "popular" girls, Violet Markey. She stands frozen, so Finch helps her get down. He saves her, but everyone thinks she saved him.
That same day, they are assigned a project in which they have to see the sites of Indiana. Finch asks the teacher to be Violet's partner and that is where the wandering began.
Finch and Violet start by making rules for their wandering such as they have to take something, but they also have to leave something. They make a list of places to go, starting off with Hoosier Hill, the highest point in Indiana.
As they travel different places, Finch helps Violet overcome different things that resulted from the death of her older sister. She has never ridden in a acar since the accident, so Finch helps her get into a car again.
Finch takes Violet to the Purina Tower, downtown. He tells her about the Jovian-Plutonian gravitational affect. After talking for a while, they fall asleep and Violet didn't call her parents to tell them where she is. Her parents make her stop seeing Finch.
Finch is falling "asleep" so he moves into his closet. He paints the walls with planets, showing the Jovian-Plutonian gravitational effect. He puts good post-it notes on his wall along with a picture of Violet and a liscence plate. He puts bad post-its in a torn up pile on the floor.
