Storyboard Text

  • When Lori got home from Summer camp she was like a new person who was super happy and content. At camp she made friends, took hot showers, ate hot meals, and even had a boyfriend who kissed her. She was motivated to make a better life for herself.
  • "If I get out of Welch, and away from the family, I might have a shot at a happy life."
  • Wow.
  • I just want to be an artist
  • Jeannette: "She intended to quit her teaching job and devote herself to art." We can see what Rose Marys mind was probably occupied with during her time in school. She intends on quitting her job as a teacher and becoming a full time artist knowing that she will not be able to make ends meet.
  • "You can't talk to me like that, I'm your mother!
  • Jeannette is upset with her mom because she spent the entire summer at school renewing her teaching license and now she is refusing to return to work. They need the money her mom makes with that job.
  • "If you want to be treated like a mother, act like one!"
  • Jeannette had just got into a huge fight with her mom about her job as a teacher. Jeannette was not worried about her dad being mad or her moms threat since she basically was a parent the entire summer.
  • "Mom's threat didn't worry me. The way I saw it, Dad owed me. I'd looked after his kids all summer, I'd kept him in beer and cigarette money, and I'd help him fleece that miner Robbie. I figured I had dad in my back pocket."
  • "Dad, moms not sick she's playing Hooky, he has to take her obligations more seriously She has to grow up a little."
  • Rex confronts Jeannette about the fight with her mom. He is upset with the way that she acted towards her mom. Jeannette continues to confess the truth about her moms irresponsibility resulting in Rex's anger and the reason why he whips her with his belt.
  • 'You apologize for that comment!"
  • Jeannette is motivated to make a better life for herself. She finally realized how detremental her life would be if she continued to live with her family in Welch. She knew that in order to be successful, she would need to make a life for herself alone.
  • "I had my last whipping. I'd put the seventy-five dollars had managed to save while working at Becker's Jewel Box. It would be the beginning of my escape fund."
