  • atomic structure is theoretically consisting of a positively charged nucleus surrounded and neutralized by negatively charged electrons revolving in orbits at varying distances from the nucleus
  • atoms have 3 subatomic particles: electrons (negatively charged), protons (positively charged, neutrons (neutral, no charge)
  • atoms have an atomic number (number of protons) and an atomic mass (number of subatomic particles in the nucleus)
  • atoms with equal amounts of sub atomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons) have no charge or is neutral.
  • atoms in which the number of neutrons differ from the amount of protons are called Isotopes
  • atoms with an amount of protons and electrons differ from each other are called Ions
  • atoms with more protons will be positive while atoms with less protons will be negative.
  • Democritus proposed that atoms are indivisible and indestructible particles that made up things. he called these atomos.
