Madame Loisel's thoughts are trained on lavish clothing and lifestyle. These are things she does not have, hence, she believes that she less desirable than the women of high nobility.
She longed for an expensive house, clothes and jewels, but what she had was torn up couches and worn out curtains.
She envied those wealthier than her, people who lived expensive lifestyles. She looked at all her friends in that way, they lived better than her.
She was married to a man of low social status. He came back to the house to his wife looking distressed and a letter in his hand.
Madame Loisel’s husband is hopeful that the letter will bring joy to her, but instead she continues to be in distress.
In fear that she will not be able to dress and impress, she begins to cry. Her husband tries to console her.
