This is my aunt Elisa Soares. She lives in Etobicoke with my uncle, and two children. Her children are first generation Canadians. But Elisa wasn't always a Canadian citizen.
Elisa was born in Lisbon, Potugal 1987. When she was around two years old her uncle, who was already living in Canada, called and said that it was time for Elisa's dad to immigrate to Canada. He left promising that they would see each other soon.
Elisa’s family gets a letter in the mail saying that her dad has found a job and is okay. The letter also says that he's saving money so that the rest of the family (Elisa and her mom) can come to Canada and become Canadians.
When Elisa turned six years old money got tough so her and her mom took a train to Madrid, Spain where Elisa’s aunt lived. It was only a 7 hour train ride and yet to her it “felt like forever because I was leaving all I had ever known behind”.
It wasn’t until a year later that their family received a letter from their dad saying that he had enough money to sponsor the two of them. They could finally immigrate to Canada.
So when Elisa turned seven her and her mom left for Canada. She was so happy that her new life was beginning and couldn’t wait to see her father again.
