- You and your friend each want the cookie, but there is only one.
- You got it!
- In a moment of pure genius and generosity, you split the cookie into two equal pieces.

- The amount of cookie has not changed. Together, the two pieces still make one whole cookie.
- Each piece is only part of the whole cookie. You and your friend each get half, or 1/2, of a cookie.
- When writing the fraction, the number of pieces we are talking about, the part of the whole, goes on top.
- The number of pieces that makes the whole goes on the bottom of our fraction.
- "So, a fraction can show an amount that is more than nothing, but less than the whole thing!"
