In a flashback to Scene 1, we find that the witches appear in front of Macbeth and Banquo. They are speaking the prophecies of kingship and success.
After the witches spoke their prophecies , we find Banquo asking Macbeth whether or not Macbeth thinks abut the prophecies. Lying, he says no, but secretly it's a yes. When he's given the title Thane of Cawdor, he sets his sight on the King.
In a quest for the crown, Macbeth kills the obstacle in his way... King Duncan. Horrified by what he has done, Macbeth returns to his wife while covered in blood and holding the evidence.
It is revealed that Duncan has been murdered. They are lead to believe that the guards did it. Trying to get rid of any evidence or witness, Macbeth kills the guards in a "mad rage".
The only successors to Duncan's throne, Malcolm and Donalbain are shaken and fear that they are next to die, so they decide to flee Scotland.
With no more successors to the throne, Macbeth is next in line and happily takes his place as King and fulfills the first prophecy.
