  • Poor & Hungry
  • Potatoes!
  • So Many People!
  • During the 1500's, Ireland did not have very much food, leaving many starving.
  • Mysterious Disease Spreads
  • In the 1600's, potatoes were introduced. No one is sure how exactly, though there are many myths. No matter how they got there, they were certainly everywhere. Everyone loved them, and for some potatoes were their only food source.
  • Coffin Ships
  • The population then increased from less than 3 million to more than 8 million. Many warnings came from many people, and though they new it was dangerous to be so reliant on one crop, they still were.
  • Peace Once More
  • In 1845, a disease spread through all of Ireland, killing many potatoes. This caused immense havoc in Ireland, and many were left for dead.
  • Everyone tried to get away from Ireland; there were so many push factors! But it was such a great distance to the New World, that so many people died on the way there. The ships got nicknamed 'Coffin Ships' because of the high death rate.
  • Peace was once more restored around the world. Though many were dead, potatoes eventually came back. Now, in 2018, Ireland does not rely heavily on potatoes, and there are Irish all around the world.
