Storyboard Text

  • The Tariff Debate
  • This tariff would be really helpful, because it would make things less expensive.
  • That's true, it would make more Americans buy my products
  • The South Disagree
  • I'm from the south, and why would I help the northerners if I don't get any benefits?
  • I truly disagree with this tariff!
  • The Announcement of the Tariff
  • Today, I hereby announce that the tariff is official in order.
  • I am outraged!! This tariff must be nullified
  • The northeast wanted a tariff on imported goods. They wanted this because it made manufactured goods less expensive.
  • Lowering the Tariff
  • Instead of giving you the right to nullify the tariff, we will lower the tariff to appeal to the South.
  • I will protest until I nullify this tariff.
  • The Southerners did not want the tariff. The Southerners thought that if they would not get anything out of the tariff, that it was not needed.
  • John Calhoun Saves the South
  • This Nullification Act was put in order because of all the southerners protesting against it.
  • In 1828, Congress passed a tariff on imported goods. This meant that merchants had to pay a fee on imported goods. This created jobs for the north but hurt the south. This shows how the south are not being a nation.
  • The Force Bill
  • We must do what is best for the nation.
  • In order, to please the South the congress decided to lower the tariff in 1832. The south still protested against the tariff. Some of the Southerners wanted to create there own country but that was not allowed.
  • The Nullification Act was passed, this allowed people to refuse to pay this illegal tariff. Vice President, John Calhoun helps the south states giving them the right to nullify the tariff. Calhoun believed that states have the power to make a law constitutional. The significance of this was that the South were making there own acts and didn't help the nation as a whole.
  • We need to work together to solve this.
  • The Force Bill let the military invoice the tariff and make the Southerners stop asking to nullify the tariff. The significance of this was that Andrew Jackson always had the authority to do this. In the end, Andrew jackson had to do what was best for the nation, not only the south.
  • Well, that means that I will have to pay the tariff.
