Everything here is what has been stolen
Connie had built up the courage to go to hers and Toms bedroom. She noticed an ash tray and cigarette butts on the ground. Those did not belong to them. On Toms bedside table there was a bag. She emptied the bag. Her hands shook horribly. There were watches, cameras, and Hamilton's necklaces and rings. Everything in that bag was what Mrs.Winston had said was stolen.
Connie turned all of the lights off and bolted to the door. When she was going, she fumbled across the room to lock the window. The window was broken. It had been cracked and removed so that someone could reach in and unlock it. The burglars had made casual, constant use of the house. She could see who it was and the burglar knew she was here. He would have to kill her.
He had gone up stairs and Connie crept through the back door without making any noise. She needed help, but without the burglar noticing her. She had some matches in her pocket and decided to light an old motorcycle on fire, so the fire department would come.
