Storyboard Text

  • Emmett Till grew up in a working class neighborhood and attended a segregated elementary school. He went to stay with his uncle Mose Wright in the town of Money, Mississippi in the "Deep South" of America.
  • Emmett Till
  • Mose Wright
  • While standing with his cousins and friends outside a country store in Money, Emmett bragged that his girlfriend back home was white. Emmett's friends (disbelieving him) dared him to ask out a white woman standing behind the counter.
  • The Old Sweets Shop
  • My girlfriend is white
  • When the Shop owner (Carolyn Bryant) saw her husband she told him what the boy said: "He grabbed me, made lewd advances and then wolf-whistled on his way out". Rob Bryant got his brother-in-law J.W Milam and drove round the boys house.
  • The Old Sweet Shop
  • The pair demanded to see the boy, Despite pleas from Mose wright, they shoved Emmett into their car and beat him behind a tool-house behind Milam's residence and then drove him down to the Tallahatchie River.
  • They made Emmett carry a 75 pound barrel of gin over the bank and ordered him to take off his clothes. The two men beat him nearly to death, gouged out his eye, shot him in the head, and threw away his body tied to the barrel of gin and covered with barbed wire. Three days later his corpse was recovered but was so disfigured that Wright could only identify from a ring on his finger.
  • Take off your clothes!
  • Authorities wanted to burry the body quickly, but Emmett's Mum wanted the body to be sent to Chicago. After seeing the mutilated remains, she wanted an open-casket funeral so that all the world could see what racist murderers had done to her only son. The white Jury decided that their decision would be to not indict Milam and Bryant on a separate charge of kidnapping.
