At the start, it was night, and land was created along with plant life in the ocean and land. Later that night, fish and water animals were born. When the first light of dawn came, birds and insects were created. Dawn was coming closer, and animals that could go in land and sea were born. Dawn arrives and humans and more animals were born. As day came, humans grew and populated the new earth. I think the symbolic nature of the story is Earth and all life was born as the day progressed, and life correlated to where they were born. This makes sense because sea life was grown in the night, and land life was created closer in day.
Darkness symbolizes man and woman who created all life.
Light symbolizes the start of life and creation of the world.
The story symbolizes the birth of life.
