Leisel's family planned on giving her and her brother to a foster family so that they could be safe from the war. On the way to the foster family her brother died. Alone, she was welcomed into the family which consisted of an and old woman, Rosa Hubermann and her nice husband, Hans Hubermann.
On the way to the Hubermann's house, after the accident, Liesel found a book called The Grave Digger's Handbook, the book interested her so Liesel attempted to read the book she didn't quite get it until her foster father wanted to teach her to read.
They started with learning the letters in the alphabet it wasnt easy but Liesel refused to give up and eventually became very good at reading and also writing.
When Hans Hubermann decides to let Max Vandenburg, a Jew, stay in there basement. Liesel begins to feel worried and scared that her foster family will get caught for hiding a Jew in there basement .
Soon Liesel becomes friends with Max and he tells her stories and they even write books together and she begins to trust more than anyone.
In order to protect the Hubermann's, Max decides to leave the Hubermann's house so they wont get caught but instead Max ends up being caught and has to walk through Himmel Street, the street that the Hubermann's live on, in order to go to where the other Jews are being held.
