Cathy Queen of Cats
Our Good Day
In Meme Ortiz, Esperanza meets Meme and "out front there are 21 steps, all lopsided and jutting like crooked teeth" (Cisneros 22). This is a simile because it compares the steps to crooked teeth using the word "like". This because the steps aren't perfectly lined up like crooked teeth.
In Cathy Queen of Cats, Esperanza describes her cats "asleep like little doughnuts"(Cisernos 13) This is a simile because the word "like" is used to compare the sleeping cats to little doughnuts. They do this because cats usually sleep in little balls that look like doughnuts.
In Our Good Day, Esperanza and her new friends purchase a bicycle. They are riding it through the neighborhood and "past my [Esperanza] house, sad and red"(Cisneros 16). This is an example of personification because it's giving an emotion to a house. The author gives the house this emotion because the house isn't a pretty house to look at.
