Big Bear worked with Louis Riel and also tried to help unite the Cree people and stand up to the Canadian Government. in August 1884 he tried to unite the Cree, meeting with Louis Riel, giving speeches at Duck Lake and Fort Carlton about the unfair terms of treaty 6
Mistahimaskwa aka Big Bear (worked with Louis Riel) and 14 of his tribe members were taken to trial. He was tried for treason and found guilty
Big Bear was sentenced to 3 years in jail. he only served half the time as he became very sick
he then travelled to Regina to live his last days with his daughter.
Big Bear died on January 17, 1888 in Regina
Alongside Louis Riel, Big Bear is also considered a very powerful leader for Canada that spoke up against the injustices the First Nations had to suffer.
