There was a big chair in the bedroom- Joe's chair- and she sat in it now and opened her book. She tried to focus, but her mind wouldn't settle (Coben 54).
She felt warning signs coming on. Maya closed the book and quickly slipped into bed. First came the sweats, then the visions, but it was the sounds that always battered her. Maya pulled the pillow tight around her ears. She bit back a scream. Tonight would be bad (Coben 55).
First thought when Maya woke up: Check out the nanny cam video. Maya always woke up at 4:58 A.M. (Coben 56).
From the left, someone stepped into view. Not Isabella. It was a man. The man in the familiar blue jeans and forest green shirt had obviously not harmed or snatched her daughter or anything like that. There on the computer monitor, Maya watched Lily crawl onto the lap of her dead husband (Coben 62-63).
Maya flipped the screen so Isabella could see it. "You saw the man right?" Isabella still said nothing. "You saw him right?" "Who?" "What do you mean, who? Joe! How the hell did he get into this house?" "Are you telling me you saw Joe on that video?" "I want answers" (Coben 73).
Maya screamed as the pain- white-hot pain- consumed her. It felt as if someone were jamming shards of broken glass into her eyeballs. Maya's knees buckled. She dropped to the floor. Isabella sprayed something in her face. Pepper spray. She heard someone running then a door closing. Isabella was gone. (Coben 74).
