Hi! I'm Rosheen McGalahan. I'm a 19 year old Irish girl. I live with my mom, older brother, younger sister, and father. We are tenant farmers in the late 1800s.
Like most Irish people at this time, we are Catholic.
Many Catholic farmers at this time were considered tenants-at-will, these means we could be evicted at any time with little to no notice. Most of my days are spent on the farm helping with the crops.
In 1845 a airborne fungi started killing off the potato crop, which was the main source of food and income in Ireland. This famine ended up killing many people including my father and younger sister. Around 1.5 million Irish people died due to starvation and disease.
We couldn't stay in Ireland due to economic hardships. We scraped together just enough money to go to America. On the boat there were many people and little food. The boat was poorly built, lacking in medical supplies, disease-ridden, and crowded.
There were many interesting people on the boat with us. We met a married woman named Aine who was going to met her husband in America.
