The Cay:Don't judge a book by its cover
By anshulvoleti, Updated
Scene 1: This scene happened on page 75.I think this shows the theme because once Phillip got slapped he just sat down and kept quiet. So after watching Timothy make rope he realized the rope is for him. This is a aha moment and this helps figure out the theme because after he realized this he thought that he should not be mean to timothy and that he should not call Timothy a black person and that he is nice. This is what the theme don't judge a book by its cover means. Phillip thought Timothy was bad because he was black but he was actually nice. Then he told Timothy not to call him young boss but Philip. The reason Timothy called him that was because white people are superior to black people. So saying this proves Phillip does not care. In the text it says"Can you call me Phillip instead of young boss"." That is how this scene shows the theme.
Scene 2:This scene happened on page 119. As first he was mad at Timothy because he left him there. Then while he was digging he had other thoughts in his mind . In the text it said "Then as I dug,I had other thoughts." I think the other thoughts were that how he called Timothy a ugly, black and a stupid man. Also how he was so mean to Timothy and that he was so nice to him. I think this will change Phillip's understanding of black people. I think now no matter what Phillip will now respect black people even if there are mean to him. Also I think he will realize he should not call them ugly. That is how this scene shows the theme.
Scene 3:This scene happened on page 120.Phillip has finished making Timothy's grave and he put him in it. I think this scene relates to the theme because Phillip was thanking Timothy for everything that he had done. In the text it says "Thank you Timothy. Take care of him god,he was good to me." I think that Timothy has done a lot for Phillip. He even took a storm for him. I think this will change Phillip feelings about Black people. He will probably not call them ugly. I think he will not just say they are a bad person. I think he will get to know them very well and then detirmen if they are bad or not. This is better than saying they are bad because they are black. That is how this scene shows the theme.
You ugly black man. I won't do it. You're stupid, you can't even spell...
