  • Simile
  • T he basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar, Millicent thought, her eyes getting used to the strange dimness. Plath 1
  • Flashback
  • What girl at Lansing High would not want to be in her place now? Millicent thought, amused. What girl would not want to be one of the elect! Plath 2
  • Characterization
  • "I want you to go up and down the bus asking people what they eat for breakfast. Remember, you can't tell them you're being initiated. " Plath 7
  • It is a simile because it is describing a place like it is a sealed jar and uses the word like which is standard for any simile.
  • Theme
  • It is a flashback because she is thinking if anybody wouldn't want to be in a sorority. It helps you get accepted.
  • Symbolism
  • Outside, the sparrows were still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike. Plath 9
  • It describes how Bev treats the people being initiated. That shows her character toward lower ranked people than her. This slide is characterization because of Bev's character.
  • Imagery
  • "Getting up and moving out of the soft darkness into the glare of light, thinking: "This is it, all right."
  • The theme of the story is struggling to fit in makes you vulnerable. But at the end finding out you don't need to be in a popular club to be socially accepted
  • " Oh, I know pretty much what it'll be like," Liane had said. "My sister belonged before she graduated from high school two years ago." "Well, just what do they do as a club?" Millicent wanted to know. Plath 8
  • Symbolism is shown by Millicent being the heather bird, unique and different from all the others. The sorority girls are the sparrows, all the same and have n uniqueness.
  • This shows imagery by her saying "getting up and moving out of the soft darkness into the glare of light" really paints a picture of emerging out of immense darkness into the bright sunny day.
