Why/How do traits change over time?
This storyboard does not have a description.
That's a great question! Follow me, let's find out!
Anthony Zakaria Period 3
Sir, did we start out the way we are now?
Welcome to my lab! You see, all species didn't start out the way they are now. Some of their traits stayed, others didn't. This is called natural selection. Let me show you an example.
WOAH, where are we?
A long time ago, some peacocks had bright feathers, others didn't. Peacock females pick their mate according to the male’s tail. The ones with the largest and brightest tails mate more often. Today, males that do not have bright feathers are very rare. So you see, the traits that contributed to survival and reproduction (bright feathers) stayed in the gene pool. The others didn't.
We sure did! Let's get more specific.
I think I get it now! Well then whatever happened to humans, we obviously had different traits long ago, didn't we?
Long ago, we used to have tons of hair. This trait was not helping us survive or reproduce, so we no longer have it.
...and that's your answer.
