Amber really, really wants a cookie from the sweet shop! Amber knows that a cookie is made from good things that her body wants to keep and bad things that it does not want to keep.
One cookie please.
Amber must chew the cookie before she swallows it. she uses her incisors to break a bit off of the cookie and her molars to crush the cookie. She can then swallow!
Amber will use her tongue to help push the chewed up food down her throat. It will travel down a tube and into her stomach. The epiglottis will prevent the food from travelling down the wrong tube!
The cookie pieces are now in Ambers stomach. They will stay there for about two hours so that they can be broken down by enzymes. Enzymes are very helpful organisms that break things down for our body and use acids to break down nasty bacteria that could make us ill!
The cookie pieces are now in the small intestine. Special enzymes are still breaking down the pieces with the help of the liver and pancreas. This is to decide what to keep and what to get rid of!
Now that everything good has been absorbed from the cookie, into the blood, it is time to get rid of the bad things!
