PTI conveys the important message that not fitting in to one's surroundings can lead to low self-esteem and confused identity, but then based on a different environment, one's identity can change.

The author wants the reader to realize that Arnold views himself as different and divergent to others due to his appearance and background.
The author wants the reader to realize the significance of this because it portrays the fact that Arnold is mentally lost and doesn't know where to go. This is true because his family and surroundings are different from those who view him as ''weird''.
"Where is hope? Who has hope?" pg. 43
"She was struck and killed by a drunk driver." pg.157
This shows how many tragic and challenging events that Arnold experienced at a young age. By age fourteen, he had already attended 43 funerals. These events negatively impact ones self-esteem.
