Storyboard Text

  • Let's pair up and discuss some situations that made us feel uncomfortable or feel good in school!
  • "I don't enjoy when I am bullied on the playground"
  • SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY RESPECT KINDNESS FAIRNESS
  • First, have students pair up and discuss how they like to be treated and how we want to treat others in the classroom. This is the first step in a successful classroom meeting that will cater to the "norms" of your specific group.
  • "When I listen to my classmates and wait to speak until they are finished, I am being respectful"
  • RESPECT
  • After students work in pairs, they are encouraged to share out experiences in which they felt empowered or things that made themselves feel not so good in school.
  • Next, introduce universal school values such be safe, be responsible or be respectful and instruct students to place their experiences under the appropriate value.
  • SAFETY: When I walk my classmate to the nurse, I am being safe
  • Respect: When I am on task and listening while the teacher is teaching, I am being respectful
  • Responsibility: When I complete my homework on the night it is given, I am being responsible.
  • After that, ask students to model these practices on the board. What does it look like when you are being responsible for your work or respectful to your classmates?
  • Once students have modeled these practices on the board, allow them time to create posters with their very own modeled behaviors. This allows for students to have a direct voice and opinion on what ways they want to be treated.
  • At the conclusion of the classroom meeting, hang the posters around the room and remind the students that they have a direct voice in guiding their education. Emphasize that these rules are for the adults in the classroom as well as the students, and it is their duty to abide.
