Nat Love was a slave before the Civil War ended. His family was set free and he left home when he was 15 to be a man who could ride free.
Love was the best cowboy in his time. He could tame the roughest bronco.
Or rope the tougest bull.
He took part in a rodeo at Deadwood, which was in Dakota Territory. Afterwards, the people called him "Deadwood Dick" and proclaimed him as the best roper in the Western Cattle country.
He later on wrote a book called, "The Life and Adventure of Nat Love, Better Known in the Cattle Country as Deadwood Dick."
