Storyboard Description

Students can create a storyboard to show what they have learned about the importance of having the same rights even if you are disabled even if that means they need certain accommodations.

Storyboard Text

  • I went to Mexico to visit my aunt. We had lots of food and fireworks!
  • What's that Diego?
  • Good morning boys and girls! How was your Christmas break?
  • I went to My Options with my mom.
  • Its a special school for students with special needs.
  • Hmm Diego what is My Options?
  • What do you mean special needs?
  • Not necessarily. I have a cousin who has down syndrome she can do some things we can, but she just needs a little more help like to read and write.
  • Uh so you mean like they can't do the same things we can do?
  • Its for students that have disabilities. Some of them can't eat by themselves, some students are blind, some have Down Syndrome.
  • Yes Veronica you are right. A person with a disability can also be someone that was in a car accident and needs special accommodations.
  • My cousin has a teacher that helps her and she does the same things we do in school but the teacher gives her more time to complete her work.
  • Yeah, people with disabilities may look different but they need the same basics things we need.
  • Oh so then a disability can be permanent or temporary. I get it.
  • Mrs. Vasquez you are right that people with disabilities have the same rights as us. My cousin works at HEB and she is engaged.
  • Oh so that's why in the restrooms we have a special bathroom stall for people that are handicap.
  • Yes Diego in fact before people did not think like this. Thanks to the Disability Acts of 1990 things have changed little by little.
  • Mrs. Vasquez maybe we should go and volunteer at My Options so that our classmates can see how important it is to not discriminate people with disabilities?
  • I am glad you think like this boys and girls. Humm maybe we should.
  • Mrs. Vasquez I also think people with disabilities should have rights just like we do because we are all human beings.
