Storyboard Text

  • The Tariff Debate
  • Yeah but it is destroying the South's economy and our relationship with Europe!
  • But the Tariff keeps US dollars in America!
  • Seceding South
  • We have the right to remove our selves from the USA and create our own country.
  • Not fair!
  • I don't know it's supposed to help our economy.
  • Why doesn't the south accept the Tariff!
  • After the Tariff was created the Tariff Debate started. It was a verbal war between the South and the North on if the Tariff should be nullified.
  • Nullification Rights
  • We the South declare that if a state dislikes a law then they are allowed to nullify it.
  • Huh. No way.
  • After a lot of debating the South got angry and said that they would secede from America and form their our country if the Tariff was not disbanded.
  • Jackson's Stand
  • President Jackson we must accept the right for states to nullify laws. It's the only way out of this mess!
  • The people of the North like the Tariff and wanted it to continue. Being the manufacturer of the goods they were the ones profiting thus having no reason to complain.
  • I know something must be done about this.
  • One of the South's ideas to stop the Tariff was to ban it all together. They said that if states disliked a law then they could choose not to follow it.
  • Vice President Calhoun wanted President Jackson to accept the terms of the nullification act but Jackson surprised him. Jackson turned his back on his party and his supporters to defend no party but America.
  • No. I will stand my ground against the nullification. Congress has decided on a Tariff and we will stick to it.
  • Since the South didn't have many manufactures they had to buy all of their finished goods from the North. This made it look like the Tariff was made to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
  • This Tariff is making us poorer and the North richer. This is terrible!
