  • Cause 1) Assassination of Duke Franz Ferdinand
  • Cause 2) MAIN
  • Course 1) Britain declares war on Germany
  • On June 28, 1914, a teenage Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, as their motorcade maneuvered through the streets of Sarajevo.
  • Course 2) Battle of the Marne
  • Military Alliances Imperialism Nationalism
  • Consequence 2) Treaty of Versailles
  • Germany attacks France first through neutral Belgium to eliminate any threat from the west before facing Russia in the east. Britain and the other great powers of Europe guarantee to protect Belgium’s borders. Belgium appeals to Britain and Britain declares war. After Britain’s entry to the war, the German army lays waste to the country.
  • Consequence 2) Rise of Adolf Hitler
  • As the German Army advances towards Paris, French and British soldiers counterattack along the line of the River Marne. After bloody battles, with over 250,000 casualties on both sides since the war began, the German army and the Allies try to outflank each other to the north until they reach the Belgian coast. This marks the end of mobile battles and the beginning of four years of trench warfare on the Western Front.
  • After World War 1 the Germans were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles which was meant to stop the war but just made things worse. It stated that Germany had to pay 3 billion dollars in repairs, take full responsibility for the war, reduce their army size, and give up land.
  • Following the Treaty of Versailles came the worst time, the rise of Adolf Hitler. His reign of terror ruined history for a long time. No on confronted him and let him do as he pleased. What a mistake to do that.
