  • The black color in “The Lottery” is symbolic of death, anticipation, and fear
  • The black box in “The Lottery” is symbolic of traditions and rituals.
  • The three legged stool in “The Lottery” is symbolic of past, present, and future. OR The three legged stool in “The Lottery” is symbolic of the Holy Trinity (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit)
  • Typically, black is a mysterious color and is associated with the unknown. As a rule, black denotes strength and is often mixed with a negative connotation like “blacklist, or black death. Therefore, the “black spot on it” holds the suspense of what is to come and the inevitable demise of one citizen.
  • The drawing/lottery in “The Lottery” is symbolic of chances in life.
  • The Black box, is a symbol of how traditions work and how traditions stay the same. Also, it shows how people don’t want to change, or change traditions. In this also symolizes in this story that the traditions of the black box will never die and that the way they operate and what they use part of their tradition won’t change and that they stay the same for a reason and they happen for a reason.
  • The character's name Mr. Graves in “The Lottery” are symbolic of tombstones and death.

In this also symolizes in this story that the traditions of the black box will never die and that the way they operate and what they use part of their tradition won’t change and that they stay the same for a reason and they happen for a reason.
  • The character's name Mr. Summers in “The Lottery” is symbolic of a contradiction the reader’s expectation of summer.
  • This shows that traditions don’t die and they can become old. Also that traditions can last for years. This can also reveal that, some people are survivors.
  • This highlights that, mr. graves is also a postman, and he delivers the mail, and his name is also mr. graves, so his name means and symbolizes that his name means death and hes also a postman so he delivers the bad news that they about deaths.
  • This symbolizes that, even though summer seems all fun and stuff, doesn’t mean it’s going to be all great, in the story “The Lottery”, when summer comes, everyone gets scared and they are not as happy as anyone else would typically be if it were summer.
