King Philip organised musical competitions to run alongside the wedding ceremonies of Alexander (of Eripus) and Cleopatra (daughter). - held @ the Theatre of Aegae
Philip entered "wearing a white cloak" (Diodorus) and ordered his body guards to follow him "at some distance from him, as an indication to everyone that he needed no protection of guards" (Diodorus)
amid the applause Philip was recieving from the many greeks he invited to the ceremony, he was approached by Pausanias, leader of the bodyguards....
Pausanias ran up to Philip, hugged him, then stabbed him "right through the ribs" (Diodorus) with a celtic dagger. Plutarch and Justin also say Pausanias was the killer
Philip died right on the spot - Pausanias tried to escape, he had stationed horses at nearby gates to station him to safety. Philip's other body guards including Leonnatus and Perdiccas followed him...
Pausanias tripped on a vine and was over run by the other men, who speared him to death R.I.P Philip and Pausanias
