"The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on repeating and repeating its sounds into the empty house." (page 1) The is empty and the clock is ticking to an empty house because all the people died when the atomic bomb went off.
"But the tables were silent and cards untouched."(-page 3) The setting in this story is in the future the setting lets you know that everyone is dead so the tables were silent and the cards untouched because of the atomic bomb.
"Dawn showed faintly in the east, among the ruins, one wall stood alone. Within the wall a last voice said over and over again even as the sun rose to shine, upon the heaped rubble and steam: Today is August 5th,2026 Today is August 5th,2026... The author shows us that even after humans are gone life still goes on. The setting helps show this because the setting is an atomic wasteland where there is nothing but a house that dies too. And even after the house is gone nature still goes on.
