Gdynia was a luxury for Jack. He lived in a large apartment which was on the 2nd floor. He had a housekeeper which made big breakfast. His mother was always wearing the latest hairstyles that were from paris, fur coats and silk dresses with high quality jewelry. When he went to school they all had to wear uniforms. Before they started school they had a big breakfast! It included fruit juice, hot cereal with butter and milk,a roll, smoked fish, cheese and a boiled eggs served in a little cup.
In mid-august the father wanted the family to stay safe so he sent Jack and the family to the grandfather's house but the father stayed back. Jack took a train to the grandfather's house which took 12 hours cause it was 300 miles away from Gdynia. When they got there Jack noticed there were a lot of men wearing long black coats with black hats. They were very religious jews which were called orthodox. When they reached the house Jack saw it was a two floor house.
When they got to the uncle's house the mother noticed that it’s a simple one story house with a small cellar, and a latrine that was kept outside. The uncle had a wife and five children. When they went to sleep that night, Jack and Jakob slept on the floor on a mattress filled with straw. The next morning they woke up and were very scratchy. They received lice from the mattress!
