  • The women's right movement started in 1848. In 1890, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the National Woman Suffrage Association. Most men thought that women should not be allowed to vote. Once the 15 amendment was ratified South Carolina had no choice but to allow women to vote.

  • The Southern Literary Renaissance was the response of the writers and artists to criticisms that the South was a wasteland. The attacks from the Northers about the "wasteland" led to a revival that celebrated the South's unique culture and heritage.

  • During Reconstruction the group numbers started to decline but during the 1920's it began to grow again. Many were suspicious of other races and of people with different religious beliefs or political views. The Red Scare after WWI started fear that European immigrants were bringing foreign ideas to the US. Klan member wanted only whites to run the government and American society.

  • In 1921, this small beetle that feeds on the fiber of cotton bolls, wiped out all the cotton crops in Sea Island. In some years, the boll weevil destroyed half of the entire crop in the state. Drought also made cotton terrible for farmers. In 1922, cotton farmers produced one third the number of bales produced just two years prior.

  • Visitors from the North were attracted to South Carolina's climate and culture. Tourists traveling through Charleston came to see the historic district with its stately homes and buildings. 
  • The growth of mass media contributed significantly to the excitement of the Roaring 20's. Movies became popular entertainment during this time.
