Storyboard Text

  • Chemistry Chapter 8.5
  • Define and give general equations for synthesis, decomposition, singlereplacement, and double-replacement reactions.
  • Predicting reactions doesn't have to be difficult! Just make connections, whether they be with your daily life, a show or movie you like, or just something you're interested in.
  • Synthesis Reactions
  • Steven + Connie = Stevonnie
  • A + B --> AB
  • Synthesis reactions follow the equation of A + B --> AB. They are a combination of elements, and one product is formed during the reaction. An easy way to think of this is the gem fusions on the show Steven Universe. When fused, Steven and his friend Connie create one single being.
  • Decomposition Reactions
  • Decomposition reactions follow the formula AB --> A + B. This type of reaction can be compared to the heads of a hydra; when one head is cut off, two more grow back. This can be related to the loss of a single compound and the gain of two single elements. They often need a "push" from a catalyst, electricity, heat, or, in this case, a sword.
  • Single Replacement Reaction
  • I'm helpless...
  • I know she's helpless...
  • Double Replacement Reaction
  • Double replacement reactions follow the formula AB + CD --> AD + CB. It is commonly associated with the changing of dance partners.
  • Combustion Reaction
  • Combustion is a hydrocarbon + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water (CH4 + 2O2 --> CO2 + H2O). It is an exothermic reaction. There really isn't a way to connect this to everyday life, but you know that if it's not any of the other four it has to be this one.
  • Combustion
  • These use the formula A + BC --> AC + B. The A element will only replace the B element if it is higher in the activity series. It's similar to the relationships between Alexander Hamilton and Angelica & Eliza Schuyler. Angelica, already experiencing mutual attraction to Hamilton, leads him to Eliza instead since there's a stronger connection. I guess you could say they had better chemistry...
