Odysseus and his men arrived at the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus wants to see if they are hospitable folk who fear the gods or wild savages with no sense of right or wrong.
They spot the cave of one of the Cyclopes, Polyphemus. Odysseus orders his 12 best men to come with him and the others to stay on the boat.
The brave men begin to enter the cave with a goatskin filled with red wine and a sweet vintage from Apollo's priest as a gift for the monster.
They get inside the cave and realize Polyphemus was out, tending his flocks in the pasture. The men wanted to steal some cheese and lambs and leave. However, Odysseus wanted to meet the monster and see if he would give them a gift of hospitality.
Polyphemus returns and starts to talk with Odysseus. Odysseus makes him mad and he reaches out and grabs two of Odysseus' men and tore them limb from limb and ate them for dinner. Odysseus begins to make a plan to get them out of there!
Odysseus gives the monster a large portion of wine which causes him to pass out. The men and their leader begin to carve a sharp point onto a green olive branch so they can blind the monster in his sleep. They finish carving and stick the branch into his eye making him go blind! The men escape and continue on their journey
