Storyboard Text

  • Prologue
  • What can we do? Burying Polynices is going against the law.
  • "My poor Antigone, if this is really true, What more can I do, or undo, to help you?"
  • "Creon has given funeral honours to one, And not to the other [..]"
  • Parados
  • "But see, the King comes here, Creon, the son of Menoeceus, Whom the gods have appointed for us [...]"
  • Scene 1
  • "The corpse...someone has just Buried it and gone. Dry dust over the body They scattered, in the manner of holy burial."
  • "What! Who dared to do it?"
  • Antigone and Ismene are discussing the death of their brothers. Eteocles got a proper burial, while Polynices got no burial at all. This makes Antigone angry so she decides to bury Polynices herself even if it goes against the law, Ismene doesn't join her.
  • Scene 2
  • They are summarizing all that has happened in Thebes & talking about the victory. Creon is seen as a person who boldly came in and took the throne from the warring brothers, and became king again.
  • Scene 3
  • "What sort of respect tramples on all that is holy?"
  • "Despicable coward! No more will than a woman!"
  • Creon enters and tells the people of Thebes that the city is safe & that he will keep it safe. He will give Eteocles a burial, & Polynices will be left to rot since he is a 'betrayer'. When the Sentry comes in to tell Creon that someone buried Polynices he is angry.
  • Scene 4
  • "An act of homage is good in itself, my daughter; But authority cannot afford to convince at disobedience."
  • The sentry from earlier brings in Antigone & retells how he & his men caught her. He evidently feels bad. Antigone boasts about her guilt & claims obedience to the higher law - not Creon. Ismene is dragged in claiming she helped bury, pleads not to let sister die, Creon doesn't listen.
  • "There is no shame in honouring my brother."
  • "Was not his enemy, who with him, your brother?"
  • Haemon comes in and tries to reason with his father. Creon immediately shuts him down, and threatens to kill Antigone right in front of him. Haemon becomes angry & leaves, saying he will never see him again. Creon alone tells the Chorus he will let Ismene go and Antigone will be trapped and starved.
  • Antigone waits for her death by singing her own funeral, and briefly converses with the Chorus. Finally Creon gets tired of this and just sends her away to her 'doom'.
  • "And must go the way that lies before me."
