  • General Zaroff is bored by the repetitive aspect of hunting.
  • General Zaroff: "'Hunting was beginning to bore me! And hunting, remember, had been my life'" (Connell)
  • General Zaroff is not accepted by normal hunters, due to his unique interests.
  • General Zaroff: "'Precisely,' said the general. 'They can reason, after a fashion. So they are dangerous'" (Connell)
  • Hunters: You hunt humans. You're not allowed here!
  • In order to escape the criticizing society, Zaroff bought an island where he could hunt humans.
  • General Zaroff: "'The island is perfect for my purposes--there are jungles with a maze of traits in them, hills, swamps--'" (Connell)
