There once was a slave named Dred Scott who lived with his owner Peter, in Missouri.
Dred and Peter later moved to Illinois, where Peter then passed away. Illinois was known as a slave free territory
Dred now wanted to be a free man. He fought hard and had his lawyers helped him form a lawsuit. Northerners believed that he should become free while southerners thought otherwise.
The opposing views created further tension, which further contributed to the civil war becuase some beleived that Dred was a symbol of rebelion, while others beleived he had no rights other than being a slave
