  • Exposition
  • Tavern
  • #$@&%*!
  • Rising Action 1
  • Whose corpse is in that coffin passing by?
  • He was a friend of yours in days of old. And suddenly, last night, the man was slain. There came a privy thief, they call him Death.
  • Rising Action 2
  • What old fool? Why live so long? Isn't it time to die?
  • Once upon a time, there were three young men in Flanders who lived gluttonous lives of sin. They gambled, partied, and drank far more than they could hold. The men swore a lot too and laughed while women seduced them to commit even more sins.
  • Climax
  • Brothers you listen to what I say. I'm pretty sharp although I joke away. It's clear that Fortune has bestowed this treasure to let us live in jollity and pleasure.
  • Before they sat at the tavern for drinks, the men saw a coffin going to the grave and one of them asked the little tavern-knave to find out who the body was. The boy said it was a friend of his and that Death killed him. Finding out that Death has already killed many people, the three men swore an oath to kill Death.
  • Falling Action
  • Lord, to think I might have all that treasure to myself alone!
  • The men came across a very poor old man who greeted them. The most conceited of the men asked why he was all wrapped up and how was he still alive. The old man replied saying how Death will not take his life. Because the old man seemed to know Death well, one of the men demanded the old man to tell them where Death was. The old man said to walk up the crooked path under the tree.
  • Resolution
  • Now for a drink. Sit down and let's be merry, for later on there'll be a corpse to bury
  • At once, the young men ran and reached the tree where they found a pile of golden florin on the ground. They immediately forgot about Death and made a plan for two of them to stay and guard the money while the other one goes to town to get food. The three men then drew straws and the youngest got the shortest stick so he immediately went into town.
  • As soon as the youngest left to the town, the other two conspired against the young one and made plans to kill him when he came back so the two could have more money. Meanwhile, the youngest one was contemplating all the money he had now and finally decided to buy poison to kill the other two. He got three bottles and put poison in two of them. He then headed back.
  • The youngest one was immediately killed by the other two just like they had planned. One of them then suggested that they should drink first before they bury the body. They took the two bottles with poison and drank it leading to their death as well. All three of the young men were now dead.
