Sensorimotor: Sarah loves to play with the ball. When she sees that she gets to play with the ball she is very happy.
Sarah suffers from a lack of object permanence, so when the babysitter covers the ball with a blanket, Sarah gets very upset.
When the babysitter uncovers the ball, Sarah stops crying and becomes really happy that she can play with the ball again.
Preoperational: Jimmy is playing with a mountains play set with his babysitter Rebecca.
Rebecca asks Jimmy what does he see when he looks at the mountains set. Then she asks him what does she see when she looks at the mountain set.
He says that she sees the same thing as him because he is egocentric meaning that he has difficulty seeing the viewpoints of others.
