  • The three legged stool in “The Lottery” is symbolic of past, present, and future.
  • The Past
  • The Future
  • Above all, the black box is a part of tradition and has been used even before the eldest person in the town was born. Tradition is related to the black box because “The Lottery” happens once a year and always on the same day. “The Lottery” is a part of the town’s ritual. In this town the people tend to do whatever the others like to do because they are ignorant and seem not to wonder or care about why they follow this tradition.
  • A symbol that represents my own life is baseball
  • The lottery in the story is a part of tradition where people’s names are drawn and whoever gets drawn, will be killed by the townspeople. Drawing names is a fair way to choose or select the person they will kill. This make it so everyone has a chance at either living or being the one who is chosen.
  • The legged stool used to hold the “Black box” symbolizes how the 3 legs present the past present, and future. This shows how the lottery is a part of tradition and has always happened and will always continue to happen. The three legs represent the continuance of The Lottery.
  • The Present
  • Baseball is a sport commonly found in the United States. It is played with nine people on the field and a person at each position. Baseball would be a symbol for me because it is a sport that you can't just play by yourself. You need teammates and others to help you out. Baseball teaches me to think about others and not just myself. It also is a great sport that I enjoy playing, and one that means a lot to me.
