  • Philadelphia, 1787: There are Antifederalists and Federalists, Antifederalists did not want to ratify the US Constitution while the Federalists did want to ratify the Constitution.
  • Virginia Plan
  • New Jersey Plan
  • In the summer of 1787, during the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, there was trash in the streets and no one cared about sanitation, so the city was very dirty and many people became ill and died.
  • Roger Sherman
  • House of Representatives
  • Great Compromise
  • Senate
  • George Washington and James Madison were very important men in the Constitutional Convention. George Washington was the President of the Convention. James Madison was the "Father of the Constitution", was always prepared and took notes during the meetings.
  • The Convention had to make a plan to replace the Articles of Confederation. The Convention was undecided between the Virginia Plan that benefited the big states by having 2 houses that were based off the population of each state. The other option was the New Jersey Plan that benefited the small states by having 1 house where every state had equal representation.
  • The Convention's members couldn't decide on a plan so Roger Sherman came up with a compromise between the two plans that had 2 separate houses called the House of Representatives which was based off the population of each state and the Senate which had equal representation for each state. Both small and big states liked this plan because they were both represented.
  • Population
  • = Representation
  • Another issue was the North and South were arguing about how slaves should be counted in the state's population. The Northern states wanted slaves to be counted as property and not part of the population but the Southern states wanted to count the slaves as part of the population to have more representation in the House of Representation. The delegates of the convention compromised on this issue by only counting 3 out of 5 of the state's slaves towards the population.
