  • Here lies Polynieces Beloved Brother
  • “I did it. I don’t deny a thing” (line 492)
  • This is Polynieces and Etecoles and they are the brothers to Antigone. They had to battle each other for the throne of Thebes after their father,Oedipus, died. To fight each other in the battle, Polynieces got together an army of men from Argos. Eteocles got his native tribes and the men fought. Both died but Polynieces was considered a traitor because he got men from Argos to fight.

  • After both Polynieces and Eteocles die, someone needs to take over the throne. Creon, who is Antigones uncle, takes over the throne. As soon as Creon gets into power he makes a strict law. His law states that no traitor shall be buried including Polynieces.
  • Though Creon made a law that Polynieces was to not be buried, Antigone did it anyway. When Creon asks Antigone if she buried him she doesn't deny a thing.
