The writer feels angry with how confusing the authors writing and his annotations reflect his anger towards Kierkegaard and O'Brien's writing. Because they aren't easy to understand and his annotations on the side of the page reflect that.
Billy Collins is talks that about students being less insightful in their reading and understanding. This shows the students' laziness in the work they do and how he is comparing the students to "fans who cheer from the empty bleachers." He like to reflects on people who aren't as driven as him.
He feels like the students he was talking about before to expand their mind because they are lazy and just sleep walking through their lives. He feels as that they should push themselves to the next level. He also explains that everyone will or can gain willingness to really tear a text apart and "press a thought into the wayside."
He uses the monks as way to show even Monks can devote their lives work to talking and reading about scripture and there vessels that last longer than the men that built them, you should be able to try your hardest in improving you education and reading in between the lines.
The writer was feeling lonely but he still felt he had the company of his book and when he found a note in the book he felt like he found a community within the readers of the book.
