"O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my captian lies, Fallen cold and dead." This is the Captian lying on the deck of the ship cold and dead.
"The port is near,the bells i hear,the people all exulting.' This is the people all happy at the port (shore).
"O captian! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;" this is the people ringing the bells.
"My Captian does not answer, his lips are pale and still, My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will," This is the captian on the ship dead.
"Exult O shores, and ring O bells!" this is the bells the were ringing. They were ringing the bells because the civil war was over and the people were rejoicing.
