  • Mother? Is it really you?
  • Salva has to leave everything behind: his school, his house, even his family. The text says,"Then he was running, too. running as hard as he could, into the Bush. Away from home,"(pg.7). This means Salva is afraid and impulsive.
  • Salva's group left him in the barn, alone. They thought he would slow them down; complain. The text says,"Nobody. Nothing. They had left him. He was alone,"(pg.13). This means Salva is discouraged an lonely.
  • There is hope for Salva when he sees the orange headscarf because his mother had the same one. The text says,"A half-sob broke free from Salva's lips. He mustn't lose track of her!"(pg.69). This means Salva is concerned for his family, and hopeful for them.
