  • New York weekly journal
  • The Morrisites reached out to John Zenger asking him to write about the awful things King Cosby has done. And so he agreed, soon enough he was handing out articles to everyone about their cruel king. 
  • After King Cosby heard about what was going on he ordered that all issues of the paper be burned in the town.
  • The Burning of the paper
  • John Zenger was the arrested and imprisoned. On November 17, 1734 Zenger was arrested for Seditious Libel.
  • The Aressting
  • The trial
  • On August 4th, 1735 the Crown V. Zenger trial started. In the middle of the trial a man by the name Andrew Hamilton steps up to  defend Zenger. He is known by many to be the best lawyer  in the colonies.
  • I will defend you!!!
  • In the end Hamilton and Zenger won the trial. Hamilton protested that if what Zenger says is true than it should not be a crime. Hamilton then got a feast and was sent off by gunshots.
  • The Ending
  • We won! For it is not libel if we speak the truth.
  • Life before the first amendment was harsh. Anything said that was negative about the king you could be arrested for and you had no freedom of speech.

  • The King Is corrupt!! No one should trust him!
  • You are under arrest for Seditious Libel!!
